Laboratory Overview

The Speech and Brain Research Laboratory is a part of the Department of Speech and Hearing Science at Arizona State University

We investigate neural mechanisms underlying normal speech production and stuttering, a speech fluency disorder that affects 1% of the population. Our research lies at the intersection of Speech Science, Neuroscience, and Engineering. Our studies examine the relationship between speech and the brain in individuals who stutter and those who do not stutter. To answer questions related to this relationship, we use kinematic and acoustic measurements of speech (e.g., speaking under conditions of auditory or somatosensory feedback perturbations) in combination with electrophysiological recordings and stimulations (EEG, tCS) and neuroimaging techniques (fMRI, DTI). The long-term goal of our research is to conduct multidisciplinary, translational research that will result in tangible benefits to individuals who stutter.
